Got Phonics Worksheets, flashcards, etc?
Just recently I’ve seen 3 different articles about how phonics worksheets or similar phonics training not only improves reading speed and skill. A phonics based computer game called Phenomena, in trials, raised reading levels 2.4 percent after only 6 hours over a four week period. Scientific America in a separate study found phonics to be the most significant contributor to reading speed determining a whopping 62 percent of reading speed. And finally, following 2 year study, the National Reading Panel (NRP) determined phonics must be taught in order for a reading program to be most effective.
This will undoubtedly fuel the debate between the phonics and whole word teaching method camps. Say what you will but with all the data coming forward phonics’ credentials are getting harder to overlook.
